A Framework for Purpose: The Twin Flames of Purpose and Resilience
In this series, we are considering PURPOSE and its importance in our businesses.
PURPOSE is what focuses our lens and acts as a value-based compass for navigating our way through what life brings. While we typically only talk about finding our PURPOSE on a personal level, it is increasingly clear that the same is true for our businesses.
To delve more deeply into what that means, we're using the word PURPOSE as a framework.
Let's recap where we are so far:
P – PERSONAL: What matters most is that you have a clear reason for the business that is personal to you. Then, you can use that reason as a proving ground for all decisions about moving forward and know that the spark that started it all is being fanned into a flame that is lighting the path ahead.
U – UNIFYING: Purpose is not just about you and what you want. It is so much more. Your customers, team, investors, and even society as a whole are all impacted and influenced by your purpose. It is one of the most vital points of connection you will have in developing and nurturing all your relationships.
We're now coming to the third element of our framework, RESILIENCE.
RESILIENCE may not be what you initially think of when you consider PURPOSE, but the two are closely related and, in fact, interdependent.
RESILIENCE is where we find what we need to remain flexible and adaptable as we pursue our PURPOSE. We know that we are always going to be facing change and challenges. But when RESILIENCE is a part of our arsenal, our PURPOSE remains protected. It allows us to overcome and persevere. And it pushes us to stay in a creative mindset and motion.
PURPOSE also plays a role in helping us be RESILIENT. That's why I think of them as twin flames. Each pushes the other higher. When we stay focused on our PURPOSE, we embrace the importance of keeping on. In the end, that's the essence of RESILIENCE.
PURPOSE is both the foundation and fuel for RESILIENCE.
"When we have a purpose - when we know
that our work makes a difference,
we are less likely to be discouraged by setbacks
and more likely to persist in the face of adversity."
