Dear Debbie:

I’m at a loss as to what to write for “content” on LinkedIn. You’ve said that posting consistently is important, but I don’t know what to say. Am I supposed to write everything or can I use other articles?

~ Barbara W.

Thank you for your questions, Barbara …I was just asked this the other day, so I’m delighted to bring the answer to a wider audience.

So yes, you ideally want to post on LinkedIn three times/week.

If you’re just starting to do this and that amount of posting seems intimidating, start with once/week, the same day each week so that people can develop the habit of looking for you on that day.

There are others who advise posting every work day on LinkedIn. That’s too much for me as a consumer. I would much rather have a break from someone’s content for a day and look forward to the next time they post rather than have the same people at the top of my feed every day. I’ve unfollowed people for that reason.

That’s me. You decide what you’re comfortable with.

Now to the content part:

You do NOT have to post original content every time out (whew!).

I love sharing other people’s content, like an Ah Ha moment from an article by Simon Sinek or Dr. Travis Bradberry.

Writing your own content lets people know you and your expertise. Sharing other people’s content lets people know what you think is important outside of your own business.

A good first step in the posting game is to share an article you find especially illuminating once/week, same day. Make sure that at the top of the post you talk about what you thought was important in the article before posting.

Then add original content another day of the week, same day every week.

When you can work up to one more day, preferably something you’ve written but it doesn’t have to be, you’re there!

Posting informative content three days/week on consistent days will build your following and let people know you’re an expert in your field, as well as letting them get to know you (the know, like & trust factor of who people choose to do business with).
