How to Shop Smart
This is the time of year when some of us go crazy and shop the sales. We buy because we “found” great deals for ourselves and for others. I know lots of women that will buy an item because it’s on major sale or because it’s a great deal. Here is the kicker though…it’s not a deal if it doesn’t go with anything in your closet. Honestly, I can’t tell you how often I hear, “I got it on sale but I don’t have anything to wear with it.”
Here are some quick tips to help you shop smart this holiday season and year round.
Set a budget
Make a list of what you “need” vs what you “want”
Think about what pieces you are missing in your wardrobe and make a list of pieces that can expand your wardrobe
Sign up for newsletters
Be sure you are “signed in” when you shop on line
Can you make at least two different outfits with it
Can you wear it throughout two different seasons
Shopping smart and setting a budget is a big one. Put aside the amount that works for you, monthly or quarterly, then make a list of what you “need” vs what you “want.” Then shop smart and take time to prioritize your purchases based on the amount of money you have put aside.
An example of pieces that can expand your wardrobe are layering pieces like jackets, vests, blazers, and/or cardigans and sweaters can be layered with every day basic pieces like t-shirts or button downs.
Signing up for newsletters may seem unimportant but companies may send you a one time coupon for a certain percentage off or free shipping and this is a great way to shop smart and save money. Plus, the store will likely alert you when the items you like and shopped for go on sale or are low in stock.
One of my favorite tips to share on how to shop smart is be sure you are “signed in” when you shop on line. If you shop while signed in and forget about the items in your cart the retailers, like Franco Sarto and JMcLaughlin, will actually send you an email with a coupon code.
I encourage my clients to shop smart by asking themselves the last two questions because if they can answer yes to both it’s more likely the items they purchase will be worn many times over instead of sitting in the closet with the tag on.
Shopping smart means getting the most bang for your buck no matter what time of year. If you need help shopping or don’t know where or how to start reach out.
