FREEDOM. What does it mean to you? You know my word for 2021 is FEARLESS... and this month's theme is fearless freedom - more about that later.
While we just celebrated our country and the freedom's we enjoy, how about you personally? What is your level of freedom - or do you feel stuck and trapped.
Medication for anxiety, depression and even sleepless-ness was up 34% last year. And a recent American Psychiatric Association (APA) poll indicated that 62% of people feel more anxious than they did at this time last year.
It's real. So what can we do?
Remember the oxygen mask?
Yes, we've all heard it... "put the oxygen mask on yourself first" ...but are we really doing that, and how? While medication may be necessary and certainly helpful, are there other things in our life we can do, in a whole-istic way? YES YOU CAN.
Here are three tips:
Begin each day in quiet contemplation. Meditate, journal, pray, walk... whatever it is for you, JUST DO IT! Get up 5 minutes earlier, lock yourself in the bathroom if you must - but get yourself centered before the day grabs ahold of you.
Get your sleep. Along with getting up 5 minutes earlier, go to bed 10 minutes earlier! Turn off the electronics an hour or more before and don't make your bedtime ritual a scrolling affair.
Move. Yes, move your body. This last year of a sedentary lifestyle has killed me, my back and my hips! Walk - if even for 10 minutes a day. Get up - and stretch or walk to the other room for a tall glass of water.
And speaking of water... BONUS tip - drink more of it! I got tired of the plain tap so now add ultima to my water, an electrolyte powder that is good for me and tasty too! (Pink lemonade is my fav!)
