Dear Debbie:

What is LinkedIn Live?

~Joyce H.

Thank you for that question, Joyce … you’re far from the only one who’s asked me lately.

As of this writing, LinkedIn Live has not been released widely, so I can explain only the concept.

It’s not unusual for LinkedIn to release a new feature to only a few customers at a time and usually to big companies like Salesforce. That also usually means that they’re working out bugs before the wide release, so that’s actually a good thing. It means it will work well when you get it.

LinkedIn has released details of how it’s supposed to work here:

https://business.linkedin.com/marketing-solutions/linkedin-live/

… but I’ll provide you with the Cliff Notes ®:

  • You need to apply to use it. (The link above lets you do that.) My clients who have already submitted their applications have been waiting quite a while given that it’s not yet in wide release.

  • It’s interactive streaming, which means that instead of uploading a video with you talking to the audience — one-way communication — it’s you streaming your video to the audience and them being able to respond in real time.

  • LinkedIn will also help you gather the audience organically, pushing out your announcement to members they think will be interested.

The following is from the above-linked page:

Engage your audience before, during, and after LinkedIn Events come with tools to engage your audience at all points in the events lifecycle.

Before the event

Post polls, images, videos, and documents to the event feed. You can recommend two posts per week

Attendees receive a confirmation email, as well as reminder emails and notification

During the event

Interact with attendees in the comments of your LinkedIn Live stream

Stream up to four separate broadcasts into one LinkedIn Event for multi-session activation

After the event

Showcase stream highlights on your Page’s “Videos” tab

Post surveys, images, articles, or content to the event feed

Share your next LinkedIn Event on the feed and recommend the post to boost exposure

Conclusion:

  • You can host an event on LinkedIn

  • LinkedIn Live is the streaming mechanism

  • LinkedIn recommends engagement activities for you to do before and after the event

  • It’s all housed on LinkedIn
