Quick Tips on How to Find the Right Size Bra

Finding the right bra is almost as challenging as finding the right bathing suit or the right pair of jeans. Many would say it’s the most challenging. To make things even more challenging it turns out there is no universal or standard bra or cup size. Keep in mind you may need to try on at least 10 different bras before you find the right size bra.

In order to find the right size bra you want to measure yourself. If you’re not sure how or where start put a measuring tape or a string just below your current bra and/or above your rib cage. You want to make sure the measuring tape is even and horizontal all the way around your body. This measurement is your starting band size. For example, my measurement is 40 inches so I would need to try on bras with a band size of 40, 42, 43, or 44 (sizes 3 inches - 5 inches up).

Next, put the tape measure around the fullest part of your breasts. Make sure the measuring tape is even and horizontal all the way around your body. Take this measurement, let’s say 43 inches and subtract the band size from this measurement for your cup size. For example, 43 inches - 40 inches is 3 and a 3=C. See chart below.

Keep in mind this is only a starting point to find the right size bra. Try “sister sizes” if one size doesn’t fit. For example, if you are a 34D you could also try a 36C in the same brand or a different brand. If you increase the band size then decrease the cup size and vice versa.

When trying to find the right size bra keep in mind the band shouldn’t be too loose or too tight, it should fit just right. When you have breast tissue, a.k.a. "back fat" popping out that means your bra does not fit you properly. The less breast tissue you have overflowing the better. If the band is riding high on your back, if the straps are too loose, or if you can see side or under boob you may need a bigger band and/or cup size.

It’s a good idea to measure yourself at least once a year because your bra size may change depending on a change in weight, aging, exercise, and/or a pregnancy. There are lots of ever changing factors that can affect finding the right size bra. Keep in mind, it’s normal for your breasts to change in size and/or shape as you age.
