Success and Kathi Laughman
Our weekly column for you to get to know our writers more personally.. and this month’s question - How do you define success.
Here, Kathi Laughman answers…
When someone asks me for my definition of success, I come back to this challenge from Albert Einstein: “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” Isn’t that the ultimate definition of success and even legacy? We are laying a foundation for the future with the creation of value that continues to grow beyond us.
When we know the core values we want to serve it shapes us. Then we just need to keep our lives on a path that provides us with the opportunity to continue to serve those values, even as they, and we, evolve. It is a much clearer path than we might believe.
Life’s clutter falls away when we get clear on this one point: Who do we want to be and is that who we are? If so, how do we put those values into service? If not, what steps do we need to take to grow into that person? The questions must be asked and answered throughout our life.
I recently shared these words from Denzel Washington with my community and they express this well: “At the end of the day, it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished. It’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back.”
That sums up success for me.
