Who Are You Hanging With?
Who are you spending your time with? A simple enough question with some potentially serious implications.
Motivational speaker Jim Rohn famously said "we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with." When you search that, all kinds of opinions pop up on whether that is true or not. But let's look at it from a different perspective.
In my programs and the foundational pillars of YES I CAN, I talk about your inner circle. Spending time with those who fill you up - with a positive attitude, motivational spirit, accountability - those who support you and YOU support as well. You know, the girlfriend you can call at any time and have a good cry, the business associate that will cheer you on when you are struggling to keep your head above water, the significant other who will give you that 6 second kiss (Google that) or hug and help you come down from the stress of the situation.
Who are you hanging with - and are you nurturing those relationships, the ones that pour into you and you, without a second thought, pour right back into them. Consider how others are impacting you, your values and your goals. Consider how their negative view of the situation or life in general is impacting how you react or respond.
Next time you are scheduling time to spend time with someone, think about it twice. We only have so much time - so many hours in a day and days in a year. If we become the average of the 5 we hang out with most, I want to be spending my time with those who will challenge me to grow, champion me as I stretch and love me for who I am - and I pray to do the same for them.
