Dear Debbie:
I’ve heard you talk about having a “magnetic” LinkedIn profile … what exactly does that mean?
~ Lynn M.
I appreciate your question, Lynn; thank you for writing.
“Magnetic,” as I use it when referencing a LinkedIn profile, means you’re using the right keywords, or search terms, for what you do and drawing people to your profile because of them.
When someone searches for someone who does what you do, they type search terms into a search engine like Google.
Using myself as an example, a frequently used search term for me is “LinkedIn Trainer.”
If that search term, LinkedIn Trainer, is within my profile (used in a profile, a search term is called a keyword … they’re exactly the same thing, but named differently depending on the context), the search engine spiders will match my profile with that search, so my profile will be included in their results … exactly what I want to happen.
The use of that keyword in my profile “magnetizes” my profile to that search.
If, however, the keyword LinkedIn Trainer is not in my profile, the spiders will find no match and will not include my profile in the search results … which would be really bad since that’s exactly what I do.
This is why knowing how to choose keywords and using them in the right places in the profile for the spiders to find them is so vital.
