Whatever good things we build end up building us
This lesson was one of the most meaningful I learned from success mentor Jim Rohn's teachings.
The fundamental reason for goals is what they will make of us in achieving them. What it makes of us will always be the far greater value than what we achieve. While this is true for all goals, it is even more acutely true with financial or wealth goals. Jim Rohn said that everyone should strive to become a millionaire. Not for the money, but because of what it would make of them in the process.
Do you have a wealth goal for 2022? Close your eyes with me for a moment, and let's transport ourselves forward to that place where you have reached the summit of that climb. You are there! Perhaps you've achieved your first profitable year in your business. Maybe for you, it's a specific revenue milestone. Or it might be that your goal is to be debt-free. Are you there? Can you see it? Are you smiling yet? Good! Now join me back here in this present day.
The point of that exercise is to take you forward mentally and emotionally. Getting to that point will change you. And, of course, you will not get there without growing and evolving from who you are today. But what exactly will bring that transformational change, and what does it mean in your life?
Let's break it down. W-E-A-L-T-H
The W of wealth is quite simple. It's about WORK. As we work our way to wealth, our work, how we do it, and our mastery of it will change. Our work and our worth are intertwined uniquely because of SELF-worth. Self-worth is impacted more than anything else by the confidence that grows from our accomplishments. Nothing will drive your future self more than what you believe about yourself.
What is next? The E in wealth is about your EXPERIENCES. Where are you going to go on this journey? What are you going to see? What are you going to experience? A wealthy lifestyle is not about what you have. It is about how you use what you have, starting today. What experiences are you creating in your life? Experiences bring emotion and are a wonderful catalyst for positive change.
Right after E, we return to the beginning of the alphabet – A. Our ASSOCIATIONS. We need people who challenge us, not as competitors but as co-creators, to find unique ways to bring our best selves to the world.
With L, we find the wealth of LEARNING. But not just in the knowing. True learning wealth happens with understanding. It is a simple matter of choosing curiosity and taking it in. It's intriguing how much learning spawns more learning. The appetites we feed are the ones that grow.
We move on now to the wealth of T: TIME. One of the journey's results is being more thoughtful about investing our TIME and our partnership with it. Of the three resources we have at our disposal (money, energy, time), time is the only one that is finite. Scarcity drives a higher value.
As we continue our lesson, we come to the final letter of H. Wealth is about HEALTH. But health is a broad subject and goes beyond physical health. Let's not forget our mental health. That is also something to consider when setting and achieving goals. Is it going to bring you peace of mind? Or stress. The right wealth goal supports us in achieving better health all around.
When thinking about what you want to achieve, always remember that whatever good things you build will be the ones that build you! Who do you want to become, and what goals will take you there? Choose those. Live those.
